Mt. SAC Softball splits doubleheader; Defeats Santiago Canyon, 3-2, loses to Palomar, 2-1

(Walnut, CA) The Mt. SAC Softball team split their doubleheader Saturday (March 25), with a 3-2, walk-off win in the eighth inning of the third game against Santiago Canyon and a 2-1 loss to CCCAA State No. 1 Palomar in the first game.

In the loss to Palomar, the Mounties took a 1-0 lead in the third inning after a single from sophomore catcher Mireya Amezcua (1 for 2, Run) that was followed by a sacrifice bunt from sophomore shortstop Katelyn Olson and a single from sophomore second baseman, Asia Chacon, that moved Amezcua to third. Sophomore center fielder, Mia Mendoza, then sent Amezcua home for the lead on a sacrifice bunt.

Palomar came back to take a 2-1 lead in the fourth inning and the Mounties were unable to come up with a hit the rest of the way.

Freshman pitcher, Aleyna Urbina, ended the game with her first loss of the season (9-1).

In their walk-off win against Santiago Canyon, Mendoza (2 for 3, RBI, Triple) and sophomore center fielder, Ashley Diaz (2 for 3, 2 Runs, Triple, Stolen Base) led the Mounties with two hits each. Urbina (10-1) pitched the final 4 1/3 innings for the win.

After the Hawks took a 1-0 lead in the fourth inning, Diaz tied the game with a single that scored Olson and moved Bender to second. Then in the eighth inning, pinch hitter, Emily Bechtel, reached on a Hawks fielding error that sent Diaz home for the win, thus improving Mt. SAC's overall record to 16-4.
