Mt. SAC Football Scores Big Victory over Bakersfield College, 45-24

Sophomore QB Steven Nava

(Covina, CA) The Mt. SAC Football Team scored early and often in its season-opening game against visiting Bakersfield College Saturday night at Covina District Field for a 45-24 nonconference victory.

The Mounties, led by four touchdown passes from quarterback Steven Nava, ran up 532 yards of total offense against the Renegades.

The sophomore signal caller threw for 351 yards, completing 30 of 39 passes to 11 different receivers. Leading the way was freshman receiver Jacob Hennie (5 catches, 125 yds, TD).

The ground game was just as successful with the duo of Hykeem Massey (7 carries, 100 yds, TD) and Asfunso Elam (18 carries, 95 yds) carrying the load.

The scoring was completed by six different players for the Mounties, along with a 37-yard field goal from freshman kicker Gabriel Dunkle.

"I was very pleased with the effort of our team (Saturday)," Mt. SAC coach Bob Jastrab said. "The offense played very well and Nava had a great game.

"Our receivers made a lot of great catches and the backs ran hard. The defense also made a lot of great stops."

The Mounties highlight plays started early with a 44-yard scoring run by Massey with just 2:24 gone in the first quarter for the 7-0 lead.

Bakersfield stopped the Mounties deep in their own territory later in the period and took over on downs at the 17 yard line. It took just five plays and they tied the game at 7-7 with 6:38 left in the opening quarter.

The Mounties came right back with a 75-yard drive, culminating with a 6-yard TD pass from Nava to freshman wide receiver Reginald Anderson (2 catches, 14 yds) for the 14-7 lead.

In the back and forth first half, Bakersfield scored a TD and field goal in just 1:21 in the second quarter for its only lead of the game, 17-14.

The Mounties then reeled off 17 consecutive points of their own to stretch the lead to 31-17 at the half. Dunkle connected with a 37-yard field goal with no time on the clock to end the half.

After a scoreless third quarter, the Mounties scored twice in the fourth and the Renegades once.

Freshman wide receiver Sean Bowden scored on a 1-yard touchdown reception from Nava for his fourth TD pass of the game for the 38-17 lead.

After a Bakersfield TD, the Mounties put an exclamation point on the victory as sophomore running back Davion Gaisie rushed seven yards for the score and the 45-24 final.

Mt. SAC is home again next week as they host Long Beach City College for a Saturday afternoon game. Kickoff is set for 1:00 pm.
