Pirates Slow Cougars Surge with Sweep

Cuesta Women's Volleyball entered its match against #4 Ventura riding a season-best two-game winning streak, but wins are tough to come by in the toughest conference in the State.  The Western State Conference boasts three teams in the CCCAA's Top 20, and five of the six member schools earned votes in the last week's State Poll.  The Cougars started the evening strong as they split the first 20 points of Game 1, which was followed by a five-point run by the visiting Pirates.  The Bucs held their advantage the rest of the way and closed out the first set, 25-17.  In Game 2, Ventura kept their momentum by winning 18 of the first 25 points and took control of the match with a 25-12 victory.  Another slow start doomed the Cougars in the final set, as the Bucs grabbed the first seven points on their way to the clincher, 25-15.  The loss completed the Spikers first swing through the WSC-North Division and dropped them to 5-14 overall and 1-4 in the division.  2021 All-WSC Middle Blocker Meredith Donovan led the Cougars with 13 kills on the night, which moved her up to #16 on Cuesta All Time Kills list, tied with former Cuesta Career Student-Athlete of the Year Hannah Katches.

The Spikers begin their second swing through the WSC-North next Friday, October 21 (6 PM) at #14 Santa Barbara City.
