Softball Sweeps Opening Day Doubleheader

TORRANCE, Calif. --- El Camino College returned to the softball field for the first time in nearly two years on Friday afternoon and scored a pair of victories to open the 2022 campaign.

EL CAMINO COLLEGE 12, SOUTHWESTERN 0

Playing on the ECC Softball Field for the first time since March 9, 2020; the Warriors erupted for 12 runs including a nine-run second inning to defeat the Southwestern Jaguars in five innings. The Warriors recorded eight hits in the inning including six straight to take a commanding 9-0 lead after two innings.

The team would add three more in the third inning to put the game away.

Sophomore Liz Cortez picked up the win in the circle, pitching three hitless innings against the Jaguars while surrendering just walk and notching three strikeouts.

Clarissa Lockett lost the no-hitter in the fourth inning against the first batter she faced but then retired six straight to close the game out. She also recorded three strikeouts.

The Warriors faced an early deficit as the Jaguars scored a run on a pop-fly single in the infield with two outs in the opening frame.

But the Warriors would tie the game up in the second inning and the game stayed that way until the fourth inning.

With only two hits to their name to that point, the Warriors offense again erupted for eight runs on six hits while getting some help from two Jaguars errors.

Sarah Reels led the way for ECC with two hits and Skylar Sanchez had a two-run single in the fourth to give the Warriors the 9-1 lead.

The Jaguars put the first two runners on second and third in the fifth but Lockett would record two straight strikeouts and then induced a weak groundout to first to secure the run-rule victory.

The Warriors will return to action on Feb. 3 when they travel to L.A. Harbor for the South Coast Conference opener. It will be the first of 14 straight road games for the Warriors. The team will not return home until March 8 when they host Pasadena.
