Pirates cruise to straight-set wins over Dons, Hawks

COSTA MESA -- It was smooth sailing for the Pirates as the Orange Coast College women's volleyball team cruised to a pair of straight-set wins over Santa Ana College on Wednesday and Santiago Canyon College on Friday.
In Wednesday's 25-12, 25-14, 25-21 road win over Orange Empire Conference foe, Santa Ana, Summer Hanks and Sara Enright each had eight kills for the Pirates, while Paige Cutwright added 7. The setting trio of Amanda Cueva, Ellie Winter and Kylie Terakawa combined for 28 assists, while libero Emily Payne anchored the Pirate defense with 18 digs.
On Friday inside the Peterson Gym, it was more of the same as the Pirates (10-0, 3-0 in the OEC) -- ranked No. 15 in the state and No. 10 in Southern California -- cruised to a 25-5, 25-11, 25-11 win over the visiting Hawks (1-5, 0-3). The offense was well distributed, with Enright leading the way with seven kills and six kills each from Rachael Street, Brisa Zapata-Reaves and Faith Jones. The OCC trio of setters (Cueva, Winter, Terakawa) combined for 31 assists.
It will be a MUCH harder matchup on Wednesday as the Pirates travel to Irvine Valley to take on the defending conference champion Lasers, beginning at 6 p.m. The 11th-seeded Lasers (6-1 overall, 2-0 in the OEC) have been led offensively by freshman opposite Jayli Nealy (77 kills) and Jacelyn Sanchez (51 kills). Setter Madeline Harkey has paced the IVC offense with 192 assists, while libero Alexandra Pestolis has a team-best 71 digs.
For the Pirates, Hanks has been rock solid on offense with a team-best 111 kills. Ellie Winter is one of the state leaders with 306 assists, while Payne is in the state top-20 with 163 digs.
OCC's next home match will take place on Wednesday, Oct. 13 against Cypress, beginning at 6 p.m.
