Irvine Valley's men's volleyball team lost its second straight match that went down to the wire.

The Lasers, ranked No. 7 in the state, lost to No. 6 Miramar in five sets at home Friday afternoon.

The Jets earned a 31-29, 20-25, 25-20, 19-25, 15-10 win to improve their record to 2-1 overall.

Irvine Valley had its record fall to 2-5 on the season.

IVC rallied to force extra points in the first set and even had set points, but Miramar came out on top.

Irvine Valley responded in the second set, pulling away late from the Jets.

A kill by freshman middle blocker Trevor Weinert gave IVC a 23-19 lead and two points later, the Lasers had a set point after a Miramar serving error.

A left-handed kill by freshman middle blocker Aaman Soma gave Irvine Valley the set.

The Lasers jumped out to a 4-1 lead in the third set, and were up, 7-4, after a net called on Miramar.

But Miramar tied it at 8 after back-to-back hitting errors by the Lasers.

It was back and forth from there with the set tied at 11, 12, 13 and 14 before the Jets took control.

Miramar ran off five straight points to take a 19-14 lead.

And the Jets were up, 22-15, after an IVC hitting error.

The Lasers tried to rally.

A block by Weinert and freshman outside hitter Colin Chillingworth made it 22-17 and a kill by Weinert brought IVC to within 22-18.

Then consecutive blocks by freshman opposite Josh Griffith pulled Irvine Valley to 22-20.

Miramar's Brody Smith snapped IVC's five-point streak with a kill and made it 23-20.

IVC had two more hitting errors and Miramar had a 2-1 lead in sets.

Irvine Valley didn't give in and played some of its best volleyball of the afternoon in the fourth set.

The Lasers went up, 22-17, on a kill by Weinert.

Miramar won two points in a row to get within 22-19, but a serving error put the Lasers up, 23-19.

An ace by Chillingworth brought IVC to set point and a kill by sophomore outside hitter Max Wise forced a fifth set.

The teams traded points in the early moments of the fifth set.

Up, 7-6, Miramar made a run. The Jets scored three points in a row – two of those coming on IVC hitting errors.

Miramar took a 11-7 lead on a kill by Smith and went up, 12-7, on a hitting error by the Lasers.

Irvine Valley had to try and play catch up the rest of the way.

But Miramar got to set point at 14-8 on a kill by Slater Bird.

After consecutive hitting errors by Miramar gave IVC life at 14-10, the Lasers saw the match end on their own serving error.

Sophomore opposite Demetre Gossett finished with 12 kills and five digs, Wise had 10 kills and six digs and Weinert finished with nine kills and seven blocks for the Lasers.

Sophomore libero Red Ramos ended with 18 digs and sophomore setter Jimi Wilson had 40 assists for the Lasers in the defeat.
