Comets dominate Olympians in 10-2 victory

SAN MARCOS, CA (4/6/2022) -- After a quick 2-0 start by the San Diego Mesa College Olympians, the Comets had the final say as they cruised to a 10-2 five-inning victory on Wednesday.

Palomar takes advantage of all situations to advance on the basepaths. They pounce on any mistake made by the opposing defense and make them pay for it. On a lobbed throw by the pitcher, right fielder Taylor Harrison turned what should have been a routine 1-3 groundout into a two-base single and a run scored by shortstop Samarah Martinez. Then in the second inning, left fielder Alexia Terrazas singled and advanced on a misjudged flyball by the Mesa left fielder which allowed Terrazas to advance to second. After a single and stolen base by catcher Elisa Haas and center fielder Cadee Herrmann getting hit by a pitch to load the bases, Martinez had a bases-clearing double as the Comets took a 6-2 lead in the second. In the fifth, Angelique Schermerhorn singled and advanced to second on the throw home as Harrison scored to take an 8-2 lead. Then Terrazas singled to go 3-3 on the day and capitalized yet again on a Mesa error and advanced to second as Schermerhorn ran home. The final nail in the coffin for the Comet's 14th run-rule victory this season came on a Haas double to score Terrazas. The Comets ended the day with 10 runs on 12 hits and no errors.

Farrah Steffany started the game for the Comets and moved to 10-1 with the win, In three innings pitched, she allowed two runs on four hits with one strikeout. India Caldwell came in to pitch two innings and allowed two hits to go along with three strikeouts.

The Comets move to 24-4 on the season and 7-1 in PCAC play. They will head to Cypress College on Saturday for a doubleheader in a top-ranked showdown. The first game is scheduled for 12 p.m.
