Mt. SAC Baseball loses to Cypress, 10-2

(Cypress, CA) With a strong day at the plate and on the mound, the Cypress College Chargers defeated Mt. SAC, 10-2, Tuesday afternoon.

With Mt. SAC trailing, 3-0, in the sixth, Cypress broke the game open with seven runs on seven hits in the inning for the 10-0 lead.

Mt. SAC starter Michael Gutierrez (0-1) had scattered three runs on four hits through five innings, before the Chargers exploded for seven runs in the sixth.

Gutierrez, in his second start of the season, struck out six batters and retired the side twice in his five-plus innings of work.

Two players had two hits each for the Mounties at the plate – shortstop, Scott Chamberlain (2 for 2, Dbl.) and designated hitter Hector Almaraz (2 for 3, Dbl.).

The Mounties only two runs of the game came in the eighth inning. With the bases loaded, pinch hitter Brent Cota walked and forced in a run for the RBI and pinch hitter Travis Hobbensie grounded out, scoring designated hitter Josh Sosa.

The Mounties will host Cypress Thursday (April 22) in the second of the four-game series this week. The game time is 2:00 pm at Mazmanian Field.
