Late Runs Sink SBVC in Home Opener

Errors in softball usually have a way of coming back to haunt a team.

And through the first two innings Wednesday afternoon, errors were a big reason why the San Bernardino Valley College softball team was trailing 3-0 to visiting Barstow College, in SBVC's first home game in nearly two years.

But the Wolverines rallied for three runs in the third inning at Colton's Chavez Park, and went into the fourth tied at three.

Unfortunately for SBVC, Barstow hit a pair of solo home runs in the fifth and seventh - and scored single runs in both those innings to add on, as the Vikings won the Inland Empire Athletic Conference opener for both teams 7-3.

Down 3-0 in the third, the Wolverines mounted their rally. With one out, Alexis Winters-Dixon bunted for a single, and went to second on a throwing error. Aniya Lene followed with a walk. Patricia Levi Luna followed with a bloop single to load the bases. Laila Montoya followed with a ground ball to third baseman Amber Delgado, who threw the ball home to force out Winters-Dixon, but the throw to first to double up Montoya was late, and Lane dove in safely at home to make it 3-1 and allow both runners to move up a base. Sereya Diaz then launched a shot to the fence in right-center that scored by Luna and Montoya - but Diaz was out trying to stretch her hit into a double.

Meanwhile, starting pitcher Alyssa Fonseca had settled down after a rough first two innings. But in the fifth, the Vikings knocked her from the game. Cecilia Hogel led off with a double, then went to third on a passed ball. She scored on a groundout by Jessica Boyd to give Barstow the lead for good. Jasmine Gutierrez followed with a shot over the fence in center to chase Fonseca.

The Vikings tacked on two in the seventh against reliever Sofia Gonzalez, including a solo home run to left by Hogel.

Luna led the way at the plate for SBVC, as she went 3-for-4 with a run scored. Diaz was 1-for-3 with the two runs batted in for the Wolverines.
