SANTA ANA TAKES DOWN GROSSMONT IN THE 7TH

Santa Ana College takes down Grossmont College softball in the the 7th (7-5) on Thursday, February 13, 2020.

Lexi Schmehr gained the loss for Grossmont against Santa Ana College. The Griffins had a strong start, putting three runs on the board in the first inning against the Dons. Santa Ana responded in the second, putting up two runs of their own.

Santa Ana then switched pitchers in the second, quickly shutting down the Griffins with three strikeouts swinging for the remainder of the inning.

Schmehr's defense regained control over the next four innings, with no hits nor runs for the Dons.

Moving forward, Grossmont's line up was able to draw walks and give the Griffins an opportunity to score. Sierra Schlichting hit a shot in the 5-6 hole to put another run on the board for Grossmont, along with a line drive to left field. Kelly Olson was hot at the plate also, with double to right center and a single to left center.

The bottom of the line-up struggled; going deep into the count fouling off multiple pitches and going down swinging.

Griffins lead 5-2 in the top of the 7th when Santa Ana started the inning with a walk and hit by pitch.

Then, Santa Ana had two clutch hits with a shot to left center to score two runs. The next batter for Santa Ana hit a line drive into right field. Right fielder Sierra Marty attempted to dive for the ball, nearly missed the catch, and allowed Santa Ana to score another run to tie the game 5-5.

Schmehr walked the next batter loading up the bases, when Santa Ana's pinch hitter drove the ball to the top of the right center field fence to score two more runs.

Schmehr regained composure to get the next three batters out with two soft grounders and a strikeout.

The game ended 7-5 after the bottom of the 7th, Santa Ana College.
