Owls Claw Their Way To Victory

Citrus College kicked off the 2022 season with a bang, downing Chaffey College 29-26 Saturday night.

The Owls start the season 1-0, while the Panthers begin at 0-1.

Citrus finished with 447 total offensive yards, including 336 yards passing.

Adam Urena drove the offense with 28 completions on 36 attempts for 328 yards and four touchdowns.

Defensively, Chandler Carthan led the. Owls with eight solo tackles and three assists.

Chaffey got on the board first in the first quarter, but the Owls answered back with two minutes left in the period. Urena found Isaiah Espinosa for a 28-yard touchdown pass.

On the Panthers' next drive, Jonathan Calderon grabbed an interception to put Citrus back on the attack. The drive extended into the second quarter where Jesse Carmona grabbed a Urena pass for another touchdown. On the pass attempt, the Owls made lemonade out of lemons as the snap was off but Austin Urena picked up the loose ball and found Alex Vazquez in the endzone for the two extra points, 14-6.

After a Chaffey field goal, the two teams went into halftime with Citrus holding a 14-9 lead.

The Panthers scored two unanswered touchdowns to jump in front 23-14, but the Owls stayed in the fight and scored halfway through the fourth. Adam Urena found Donovan Zackery for an eight-yard touchdown to put Citrus within two, 23-21.

Chaffey made a field goal to with four minutes left in the game to put some pressure on the home team to get another touchdown before time expired.

The Owls did just that with just about a minute on the clock. Adam Urena found his brother Austin Urena to put Citrus up by one. Citrus tacked on some insurance with a two-point conversion as Adam Urena found Espinoza wide open in the endzone.

Chaffey challenged Citrus with three seconds on the clock as it made its way into the red zone and attempted a 29-yard field goal, but it swung wide right to secure the win for the Owls.

Citrus looks to build on the scrappy win as it heads to Grossmont College next Saturday at 3 p.m.
