Hawks Win OEC Tournament Opener
The Santiago Canyon College Softball defeated the Orange Coast Pirates 8-4 today for the opening game of the Orange Empire Conference Tournament. The win advances the Hawks in the winner's bracket where they will play at Fullerton College tomorrow at 2:00pm.
The Pirates struck first posting 2 runs in the top of the first inning on a walk and 3 singles. Hailey Guillen forced a strikeout to end the scoring threat bringing the Hawks up in the bottom half of the inning where they Hawks offense exploded. Sabrina Rivera led off with a base hit and advanced to second on a stolen base. Hailey Guillen reached on a single and Liliana Navarro was walked to load the bases. Samantha Villanueva forced a fielders choice that allowed Rivera to score. Alyssa Yslas singled to right field plating Guillen to tie the game. The Hawks took the lead when Navarro came across to score on a wild pitch. Alex Molina drove to center field that scored Villanueva followed by an RBI single from Jazmyn Moetului that scored Yslas. The Hawks final 3 runs of the inning came from a 3 run home run off the bat of Jade Costa putting the Hawks up 8-2.
While OCC was able to add another run in the 3rd and one more in the 7th, the Hawks defense remained perfect with no errors behind winning pitcher Hailey Guillen. Guillen threw a complete game and struck out 4 Pirate Hitters.
Jazmyn Moetului finished the day going a perfect 3-for-3 at the plate an RBI and a run scored. Alexandra Molina went 2-for-3 with a double, a run scored, and an RBI.
