Spartan Volleyball Open Conference Play

MiraCosta volleyball players jump to block a hit by the opponents.

The MiraCosta women's volleyball team has opened conference play with a 3-1 record, with wins against Southwestern, Miramar and Imperial Valley. The lone loss was at the hands of Grossmont College, which is currently also ranked in the top 20 in the state. In the most recent ranking the Spartans came in as the 15th ranked team in the state and the 9th in Southern California.

The Spartans beat Southwestern College 3-1 led by Jackie Gracey's 21 kills.  Gracey hit a .405 and added 13 digs, for a complete game. Sophomore setter Summer Hoslett quarterbacked the squad finishing with 38 assists and 14 digs. Hoslett had multiple targets in addition to Gracey including Kailyn Jager (10 kills), Amaya Bookharat (7), Makayla Hicks (7) and Alexa Radovanovich-Duenas (6)

Against Grossmont College MiraCosta won the first game 27-25 but then dropped the next three.  Jager, Gracey and Hicks led the Spartans with 15, 10 and 8 kills respectively. Hoslett finished with 35 assists while Jager and Riley Komo both had double digit digs.

MiraCosta swept Miramar College, 25-14, 25-17, 25-18.  The Jets are a new program and have shown improvement under new head coach Nancy Ros, but on this night weren't ready for the one two punch of Kailyn Jager and Makayla Hicks.

The Spartans beat Imperial Valley on the road, which is never an easy trip due to the the long drive.  Despite dropping the third set, MiraCosta won 3-1 and escaped with the win. Jager led the way with 20 kills and 12 digs.  Four other players also finished with 10 or more digs on the night.

MiraCosta will next be in action on Friday when they host San Diego City College, who was given an honorable mention in the state ranking.  First serve will be at 6PM.
