Softball Walks Off L.A. Mission

TORRANCE, Calif. --- El Camino College capitalized on two errors in the eighth inning to bring in the winning run and score a 6-5 non-conference win over L.A. Mission in eight innings on Wednesday afternoon at the ECC Softball Field.

The Warriors (18-14) capitalized on two costly mistakes my the Eagles' (17-14) defense in the eighth inning to secure the walk-off win. With a runner on first and two outs, Sarah Leyba hit what should have been the third and final out on a groundball to third base. But Eagles' third baseman Violeta Espinoza airmailed the throw over first base for her third error of the game, allowing Leyba to reach safely and Skylar Sanchez to advance to third.

The calamity did not end there though as right fielder Haylee Sanchez threw to home to prevent Sanchez from scoring the winning run. Skylar Sanchez, who was halfway to home plate, turned back to third but then broke for home again after the throw went over catcher Cristabelle Alvarado's glove and to the backstop. But the Eagles were able to pounce on the loose ball and make a throw home that would have gotten Sanchez in plenty of time, but Alvarado muffed the throw and Sanchez scored the game-winning run to end a wild sequence and a game that went back and forth early.

Liz Cortez got the win in the circle for ECC as she tossed four and 1/3 innings of scoreless relief. She allowed two hits, walked one and struck out two.

Lizbeth Mora took the loss for the Eagles, going seven and 2/3 innings where she allowed six runs, four earned, on 11 hits. She walked two and struck out four.

Alyssa Lujan, Kayla Inzunza and Sanchez all recorded two-hit games on the day to lead the Warriors offense.

The Warriors will return to action on Thursday as they host a South Coast Conference game against Cerritos, a team the Warriors have lost twice to so far this season. The Falcons are currently in second place in the SCC. First pitch is set for 3 p.m.
