Pirates roll past Corsairs, 41-7!

COSTA MESA -- Playing in front of the majority of the OCC student-athlete population, the Orange Coast College football team made their classmates proud with a 41-7 nonconference win over visiting Santa Monica City College on Saturday night inside LeBard Stadium.

After coming close to win No. 1 last week (a 31-26 loss at Grossmont College), the Pirates (1-3) found the "win" column with a well-rounded complete performance. Coast racked up a season-high 435 yards of total offense, while holding the Corsairs (0-3) to just 172, including just 25 yards on the ground.

OCC more than doubled SMCC's first-downs (29-14) and dominated the time of possession by over 13 minutes over the Corsairs.

Quarterback Baylor Ayres was on point, completing 18-of-25 passes for 205 yards and three touchdowns, while running back J.P. Segura pounded his way through the SMCC defense, rushing for 119 yards and a touchdown on 17 carries, while also leading the way with five receptions for 49 yards.

The Pirate passing game was spread out throughout the lineup as TEN different players caught at least one pass, while Glenn Atkins, Kaleb Stamps and Max Difilippo each coming down with touchdown catches.

Coast set the tempo right from the opening kickoff as Stamps forced a fumble on the SMCC kickoff and Nathaniel Lyken recovered the loose ball, putting the Pirates deep into SMCC territory right away. Just three plays later, Ayres scrambled out of danger and found daylight for a 21-yard touchdown run, putting OCC up, 6-0.

Santa Monica's best drive came on its next possession as the Corsairs grabbed a 7-6 lead after capping off a 13-play, 65-yard drive with a 2-yard TD run by quarterback Forrest Brock.

Coast quickly responded when a 59-yard kickoff return by Kaden Baptista put Coast back deep into Corsair territory and a 6-play, 29-yard drive was ended by a 6-yard TD strike from Ayers to Stamps, putting the Pirates up for good.

It stayed that way until 2:25 left in the second quarter, when Ayres hooked up with Difilippo on an 18-yard touchdown completion, putting the Pirates up, 20-7.

After Santa Monica was held to a 3-and-out, Ayres hit his third TD of the night on an 8-yard completion in the end zone to Atkins with 19 seconds left, putting the Pirates up 27-7 at the half.

Coast tacked on touchdown runs by Ayres in the third quarter and Segura in the fourth to cap off the scoring, giving the Pirates win No. 1 on the season.

OCC returns to action on Saturday at Mt. San Jacinto College, beginning at 1 p.m. OCC's next home game will be on Saturday, Oct. 15 against Citrus College, also at 1 p.m.
