Baseball: Drops Season Opener to the Comets

Huntington Beach, Calif. - The Golden West College baseball team dropped their home opener 11-4 to Palomar College on Friday.

Despite Palomar making five defensive errors, the Rustlers could not capitalize enough runs to put themselves back in the game. The offense put together 10 hits, but all four runs that were scored, were unearned.

Designated hitter, Ayden Garcia, led the Rustlers in the box with four hits, two of which were doubles. The freshman from San Dimas earned two RBI and also earned his first stolen base of the season.

Starting pitcher JD Rodriguez faced 17 Palomar batters over three and a thirds innings. The Comets jumped on the board in the first inning off with a two-run home run to the right of the scoreboard. He left the bump responsible for five strikeouts, a walk, three-of-four runs scored, and five hits. With this loss, his record sits at 0-1.

Freshman Lucas Hines and returner Matt Gaunt struggled out of the bullpen, allowing five runs through the next two frames of play. Ryan Leonardo and Jake Ferretti held down the later innings, both striking out one batter and allowing no earned runs.

The Rustlers look to bounce back overnight and secure their first win of the 2023 season as they travel to Palomar. First pitch is scheduled for 12 p.m. on Saturday.
