The West Valley softball team worked through the drizzle to sweep a pair of non-league games from Lassen Saturday in Saratoga.

The Vikings (13-5, 0-2 Coast-South) held on for a 5-3 win in the opener thanks to a 12-strikeout five hitter in the circle from America Maples and a big outing at the plate from Cayla Williams.

Maples was in control throughout striking out the first four Cougars she faced, until giving up two runs in a rocky seventh. She got cleanup hitter McKenna Pasquinelli to pop to Hannah Hillman at second with a runner on third to end the game.

Williams, who came into the weekend as the state's second leading hitter with a .641 average, went 3-3 with a scorching line-drive home run on the first pitch she saw in the bottom of the sixth. Megumi Pennebaker was 2-2 with a two-run double and Bianca Ceja put the Vikings on the board with and RBI double in the second.

An 11-hit attack paced WVC's 10-2 five-inning win in game two. Williams picked up the win in the circle with nine K's and five hits - one per inning.

Zoe Mendez rocked the Cougars (3-11) with a grand slam in a third inning that saw 13 Vikings head to the plate. Airiel Silva, Mya Galindo and Sierra Hillman all had RBI singles and Hunter Miramontes capped the nine-run inning with an RBI double.

Mendez finished 2-3 with five RBI, while Miramontes and Galindo were both 2-2.

The Vikings return to Coast-South action Tuesday (3/10) with a home game against Hartnell (5-11, 0-3). First pitch is 3:00pm.
