Women’s Tennis: Short-handed Roadrunners pick up 6-3 win over Mt. SAC

WALNUT – Despite starting in a 2-0 hole being short one player, the Rio Hondo College women's tennis team won five of the six matches that were contested to defeat Mt. San Antonio College by a final score of 6-3 on Tuesday.

The South Coast Conference victory snapped a four-match losing streak for the Roadrunners and improved them to 3-5-1 overall and 2-2 in conference play.

Rio Hondo got wins in doubles from the No. 1 team of Nicole Lule and Daisy Haro (8-5) and the No. 2 team of Ocean Velasquez and Nadia Santoyo (6-1).

In singles, No. 1 Lule (6-2, 6-3), No. 3 Velasquez (6-1, 6-3), No. 4 Santoyo (6-0, 6-2), and No. 5 Isabel Luna (7-5, 6-2) all were victorious.

Head coach Karen Unger was proud of her team's effort against the Mounties.

"Everyone on the team won either in singles, doubles, or both," said Unger. "Some of my team wasn't playing their best against Antelope Valley (5-4 loss), they came to play against Mt. SAC. It was an especially good result since we were already down two points since we were down a player."

Rio Hondo plays next on Thursday (Mar. 10) when its hosts Mt. San Jacinto College in a 2 p.m. conference match.
