The West Valley beach volleyball team opened Coast Conference action Friday with wins over Monterey Peninsula and Gavilan at Main Beach in Santa Cruz. The Vikings (7-3, 2-0 Coast) traveled over the hill for a beautiful, if blustery, day at the beach against a pair of short-handed opponents.

In the 4-1 opening match win against MPC, the Vikings found themselves tied 1-1 with the Lobos (1-5, 0-1) after the first wave. WVC 1's Katie Kishton/Flor Porras dropped a tight 21-18, 21-19 match to Kylie Moore/Teresa Ochoa, while the Vikings took the 5's by forfeit. The second wave was all West Valley.

WVC's Camdyn Albrecht/Alina Valenti dispatched Kailey Del Real/Kathryn Chen 21-13, 21-7 in the 2's, Taylor Tullo/Elia Dueñas defeated Katelyn Walker/Alexandra Sheek 21-16, 21-11 in the 3's, and Keilli Voss/Kate Blackwell overwhelmed Alexis Chaney/Cori Braun 21-4, 21-12 in the 4's.

The afternoon match saw the Vikings up 2-0 after a pair of Gavilan (0-4, 0-2) forfeits in the 4's and 5's. WVC 1's Kishton/Porras rolled past MaKenna Deeth/Jasmin Lopez 21-8, 21-5, while Albrecht/Valenti twinned Maria Brozic/Yaileen Lopez 21-13, 21-13 in the 2's, and, in the 3's, Tullo/Dueñas handed Emma Fong/Maddie Clark a 21-7, 21-8 loss.
