Vaqueros rally late to down Griffins

El Cajon, CA – The Grossmont College Griffins lost to the 14th-ranked in Southern California Glendale Community College Vaqueros by a 7-6 score.

Zavien Watson was a beast going 4-for-5 with three runs scored in the leadoff spot for the Griffins (5-4). Ethan Caschetta, Luke Denos and Noah Lane all had multi-hit games for G-House. The Green and Gold knocked around the Vaquero pitching staff for 13 hits.

Glendale (8-3) was led by Joey Craig who roughed up Griffin pitching for a 2-for-3 line including an RBI double in the opening frame while scoring three times.

The Vaqueros jumped out to a 2-1 lead after one inning of play. Grossmont tied it up in the bottom of the second with Noah Lane getting on with a single, stole second advanced on a ground out and came in via another ground out.

In the bottom of the fifth, Watson doubled to left field to begin the frame. After a Caschetta single and a flyout, Denos singled to Center driving in Watson and moving Caschetta over to third. But that is how the rally finished.

Glendale posted a three-run top of the sixth when they got a bases-clearing double from Izzy Maadariaga. Grossmont wouldn't stand for that as they tied it back up in the bottom of the frame. With two outs, Jake Allen singled, Watson followed that up with another single moving Allen to second. With a new pitcher uncorking a wild pitch moving both runners up 90 feet, Caschetta singled through the left side to bring them both home.

The Vaqueros would score six unanswered runs late in the game to pull out the 11-5 victory.

Grossmont will continue their home-stand with a Saturday (Feb. 19) High Noon showdown against East Los Angeles College.
