Softball: Seven-run fifth inning leads Cerritos to a win

Down 7-4 heading into the top of the fifth inning, the Cerritos College softball team scored seven times in the inning and went on to post an 11-8 win over Chaffey College on Tuesday. Weather permitting, the Falcons (5-4) will host East Los Angeles College at 3:00 p.m. on Thursday in their South Coast Conference opener.

Cerritos loaded the bases with one out when Marley Manalo (Walnut HS), Miranda Diaz (California HS) and Brooklyn Bedolla (Mayfair HS) all drew walks against starting pitcher Tori Martin. Sophomore Maddy Guillen (La Puente HS) drove in the first run with a walk against relief pitcher Sarah Esquibel. With two outs, sophomore outfielder Alyssa Capps (Downey HS) cleared the bases with a double and then scored on a double by Richere Leduc (California HS).

Freshman Reanna Carranza (El Rancho HS) earned the win when she allowed two runs (one earned) in four innings of relief, with Leduc coming in to record the final out of the game. Sophomore starting pitcher Courtney Callison (Santa Fe HS) lasted 2 2/3 innings and surrendered six runs (one earned) and struck out three.

The top of the order in Alyssa Sotelo (El Rancho HS) and Leduc combined to go 6-for-10 with four runs scored and three RBI, while Capps provided a pair of hits and three RBI from the bottom of the bating order. Freshman Jazmine Macias (La Mirada HS) also clubbed a two-run home run in the third inning.
