Women’s Volleyball Takes Two of Three on Opening Week

El Camino College began its 2019 campaign with a pair of victories in three matches, including a sweep of its two matches at the Long Beach Quad Tournament on Friday at Hall of Champions Gym.

AUG. 28 - MIRACOSTA 3, EL CAMINO COLLEGE 1

The Warriors had a stumble out of the gates to the 2019 season, falling on the road to MiraCosta in four sets. It was a competitive match as all but one set was determined by a margin of four points or less. Mikayla Clark and Caitlin Donatucci each recorded double-doubles in the loss.

The offense struggled for ECC as the team attacked at a .117 clip but the defense scrambled all over the floor, posting 61 digs including 17 from libero Kelly Donatucci, leading the team.

AUG. 30 – EL CAMINO COLLEGE 3, SAN DIEGO MESA 1

The Warriors evened out their record in their first match at the Long Beach Quad Tournament at Hall of Champions Gym.

San Diego Mesa jumped out to an early lead, taking the first set with a late run. The second set proved pivotal as the teams went back-and-forth before the Warriors edged out a 25-23 win to even the match.

It provided a spark for the team as the Warriors would go on to take the final two sets to secure the match and get their first win of the year.

Clark and Jocelyn Lacroix each blasted down 15 kills with Clark adding 15 digs for her second straight double-double. Caitlin Donatucci dished out 35 assists and added 10 digs for her second consecutive double-double as well. Cassidy Crosby added 11 digs in her first action of the season and Kelly Donatucci led everyone with 27 digs to anchor the defense.

AUG. 30 – EL CAMINO COLLEGE 3, PALOMAR 0

In their final match of the week, the Warriors had to scrap in the opening frame before running away with the victory against Palomar.

The Warriors saw a lead slip away in the first set as the Comets tied things up, 14-14. But from that point on, the match belonged to ECC. The Warriors outscored the Comets 61-18 from that point on to cruise to a sweep (25-19, 25-6, 26-7).

Clark capped off her stellar week with 13 kills and a .294 kill percentage and came just shy of three double-doubles, posting nine digs. Caitlin Donatucci dished out 32 assists and Kelly Donatucci led the defense with 12 digs.

The Warriors will return to action Wednesday for their 2019 home opener as they welcome Moorpark to the ECC South Gym. It will be the Warriors final season in the venue.
