FOOTBALL: FLYING PAST JAGUARS

The FC football squad took a trip down to Chula Vista to take on Southwestern College on Saturday night and had great success against the Jaguars winning it 31-0.

The Hornets put the game's first points on the board at 5:06 in the first quarter on a 16-yard run by quarterback Tra Edwards. It was a nice play-fake to running back Brandin Rankins, who served as a decoy up the middle allowing Edwards to take it the rest of the way on the left side of the field.

In the second quarter with 6:48 left in the first half, Ceasar Velazquez added three more points to the Hornet lead kicking in a 34-yard field goal.

A high snap by the Jaguars punt team sailed through the back of the endzone for a safety giving the Hornets a 12-0 lead at 3:15 in the second. Fullerton took the ball down the field on the ensuing kickoff giving Velazquez a chance to knock in another 34-yard field to put FC up 15-0 as the final seconds of the first half ran off the clock.

The FC defense was very stout in the first half shutting out Southwestern with strong plays made by Zach Brogden (interception) and Troy McDonald

In the third quarter FC quaterback Chandler Galban set up a 1-yard plunge by with a nice 6-yard run. Ryan Black's second effort brought the ball across the goaline for the Hornets second TD of the game. Velaquez's PAT put Fullerton up 22-0 at 4:52.

With a healthy lead, Fullerton ran the clock by running the ball with great success in the fourth quarter. Fullerton pounded the ball down the field the to the Jaguar 4-yardline setting up a 14-yard chip shot for Velazquez's third field goal with 9:18 left in regulation to go up 25-0.

A few plays later, the FC defense stepped up again forcing a SWC fumble recovering it in Jaguar territory (35-yardline). The first play of the Hornet drive saw Galban hit wideout Kashan Griffin for a 33-yard strike. Af false start penlalty put FC back on the Jag's 7-yardline. Ryan Black finished off the drive with a 7-yard run up the middle for the final score of the game at 8:11.

Again, the FC defense was superb locking in 8 sacks on the night.

The first time the Hornets and Jaguars played was back in 1962, a 14-0 Fullerton College win under Hall of Fame Coach Hal Sherbeck. FC leads the all-time series 5-2.

Up Next: The Hornets (5-2 overall, 2-0 Southern Conference) will head back down to south to play against San Diego Mesa College for another Southern Conference game. Kickoff is at 6:00 pm.
