Cypress Women’s Tennis Wrap Up Season in Ojai

CYPRESS, CA- Charger Women's Tennis (1-13, 0-6 OEC) season has come to an end.

The freshmen team has concluded their 2023 season but not before earning a victory in the Ojai Tournament. Six players off the roster qualified and competed in the tournament.

The Cypress players eligible to participate played in the historic Ojai Tournament that has run since 1896. Shellah Gabasan, Mia Kassabian, Kassy Nguyen, Sidney Dominguez, Katie Wong and Eliza Carrillo all competed at the tournament.

Going into the weekend event, Gabasan as a single was ranked #15 in the SoCal while her double with Kassabian was ranked #17. Gabasan bypassed the first round and went on to win against San Diego City College. She would later be defeated by a single from City College of San Francisco.

For doubles competition Gabasan and Kassabian pair won their first meeting against Ventura College then lost to American River. Dominguez and Nguyen fell to Mt. Sac while Carrillo and Wong were defeated by Antelope Valley.

The team's success and accomplishments were recognized on and off the court. Gabasan was nominated in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association for Rookie of the Year. Katie Wong, who managed the team's social media presence, was elected as Cypress College's ASI VP for the 2023-24 academic year.

As the season went on, a sense of camaraderie was built throughout each meet and trip. Head Coach Matt Harris watched as the team grew with each other and progressed over the season. Harris said that the season was a "big growth experience" and "learning experience" for the freshmen team. He is proud of how the season ended and is excited to see the players perform as sophomores in the 2024 season.
