GCC Women's Volleyball suspends season but celebrates playing together and sophomores in loss to Canyons

In a season that will be recalled as most challenging, the GCC Women's Volleyball Team put the trials and tribulations of a year filled with the strife of injuries, COVID-19 issues and playing all but a handful of matches away from home to have fun, smile and laugh in its suspended season finale Friday, Oct. 29 in the Verdugo Gym against College of the Canyons. The postponed four games over the next two weeks were against West L.A., Citrus and Bakersfield Colleges.

The season record will show the result as a four-game loss to the visiting Cougars, 25-17, 25-20, 17-25, 25-16, but for the few onlookers in the gym, the game was a brief snapshot of what joy can look like by just playing the game as the Lady Vaqs celebrated their sophomores playing their final home game and battling despite having just eight players in uniform and falling behind early in the match.

The first two game scores were 25-17 and 25-20 but GCC fought early and late to keep the scores close with good passing and timely hitting in stretches until a slew of errors undermined them. Game #3 saw Glendale take a 12-11 lead and extend that to 15-12 and then 20-12 against a much taller COC squad and won that game 25-17. Canyons started fast in game #4, leading 8-3 before Glendale tied it at 9-9 but fell behind again 16-11 before coming away with the 25-16 match ending victory.
