Falcons grind out extra-inning win to complete sweep of Porterville

PORTERVILLE – West Hills College Coalinga had to wait four days but the Falcons eventually earned their three-game Central Valley Conference sweep of Porterville College by defeating the Pirates 7-5 in 10 innings on Wednesday.

Saturday's originally-scheduled series finale between the two squads was postponed due to poor field conditions at PC following Friday's rain.

On Wednesday, West Hills rallied late against Porterville to force extra innings. Trailing 4-3, the Falcons scored twice in the top of the eighth to take the lead at 5-4. But Porterville came right back to tie it up with a run in the bottom of the frame.

In the 10th, West Hills came through in the clutch to score both its runs. After two quick outs, Trenton Avitia singled while Jack Hanger and Izaiah Dandridge drew walks to load up the bases. Joziah Valdez followed with a two-run single that proved to be the game-winner.

Avitia (3-for-5, 3 runs, RBI) and Valdez (3-for-3, 2 RBI, walk) both had three hits top lead West Hills at the plate. Hanger (1-for-4, run, walk) drove in three runs. His two-run single in the fourth gave the Falcons a 2-1 lead.

Diego Valdez pitched well in the start. He struck out 10 batters over five innings while allowing three runs (2 ER) and two hits. Nikayha Castro was the winner in relief as he tossed the final five innings andf gave up two runs and two hits.

The victory improved the Falcons to 8-10 overall and 3-1 in Central Valley Conference play.

Wednesday's contest was wedged in between the first and second games of a three-game conference set with Fresno City College. On Tuesday, the Falcons fell 10-2 in the opener in Coalinga and next travel to Fresno for Game 2 on Thursday (Mar. 10) at 6 p.m.
