Women’s Basketball: Rio Hondo season ends with playoff loss to Cerritos

WHITTIER --- The 2021-22 Rio Hondo College women's basketball season came to a close following a 54-47 loss to visiting Cerritos College in an opening-round game of the Southern California Regional Playoffs on Tuesday.

The No. 15-seeded Roadrunners got off to a slow start and were held to single-digit scoring during the first three quarters of the game. Down 36-22 to start the fourth quarter against the No. 18 Falcons, Rio Hondo finally came alive. The Roadrunners outscored Cerritos 25-18 over the final period but the deficit was too much to overcome.

In her final game as a Roadrunner, sophomore Jennyfer Morales posted a double-double with a team-high 16 points and 10 rebounds.

Freshman Rosalie Avalos posted a double-double of her own with 15 points and 13 rebounds. She also added 7 steals. Jiselle Cabrera chipped in with 10 points and 7 rebounds.

Rio Hondo was making its third straight postseason appearance under head coach Rene Herrera. The Roadrunners ended with an 11-16 overall record and went 3-5 to finish in third place in the final South Coast Conference North Division standings.
