Huskies Snap Slide on Sophomore Night

Huskies all smiles after win

In East Los Angeles College's last meeting with Mt. SAC over in Walnut three weeks ago, the Huskies' (16-11, 2-5) were unable to hold onto their halftime lead as the Mounties (20-7, 5-2) mounted a huge comeback in the third quarter en route to defeating ELAC. In tonight's rematch, the home-team Huskies found themselves again with a halftime lead, except this time it was they who outperformed Mt. SAC in the third quarter leading to a 68-50 win. The victory was huge, as it snapped a five-game losing streak and also bolstered the team's playoff resume (it helps that the Mounties are first in the conference and ranked ninth overall in the state).

It was ELAC's bench that lead the way in this one: reserve guard Katherine Headspeth came off the bench to lead all scorers with 23 points and added six rebounds, two assists, two steals and two blocks. It was only her fifth game of the season and second conference game of the year, and her inspired play is a reason Coach Turner is happy to finally have his full roster at his disposal. Fellow reserve Maya Clark also had a huge game with 18 points and 19 rebounds, and was a huge reason the Huskies' were about even with the Mounties on the boards, 45 to 46. (to wit: in their previous meeting against Mt. SAC, East was outrebounded 46-33). Headspeth and Clark combined for 41 of the Huskies' 68 points; the bench unit as a whole provided 49 of the team's 68 total points.

HUSKY BITS:

  • Enjoying a deeper bench than at any point earlier in the season, head coach Bruce Turner was able to utilize nine total players in tonight's game. Consider that in the January 31st matchup, Coach Turner only had seven players available.
  • The Huskies held the Mounties to just 28.4% shooting, while making 39% of their shots.
  • As tonight was the regular season home finale, the team held its Sophomore Night celebration during halftime: Headspeth, Ryan Terry and Citlaly Davalos were all honored with gift baskets and framed photos.

UP NEXT:

  • ELAC finishes it's regular season at Rio Hondo this Friday at 5pm. The team will learn of its postseason placement when seedings for postseason matchups are expected to be released on Sunday, February 24th.
