Women’s Volleyball: Roadrunners erase two-set deficit to beat Cerritos in five

Rio Hondo and Cerritos College battled for a second time this season on Friday. And for the second time, the match would need five sets to be decided. Facing a possible sweep at the hands of the Falcons, the Roadrunners trailed two sets to none and went on to win the final three to pull out an impressive 3-2 victory.

Rio Hondo lost a pair of tightly-contested opening sets by scores of 22-25 and 23-25 before rallying to win out 25-22, 25-21, and 15-9.

Head coach Teddi Esko was proud of her team's effort on Friday.

"This team continues to amaze me with their drive and fight, Esko said. "It's been a lot of fun working with this team as they have so much capability. Our skill is strong across-the-board which has enabled us to move players around to generate the best possible lineup and chemistry."

Esko pointed out the play of setter Haedee Estrella who stepped up big in the role of libero. Ariel Garcia also played out of position, moving from the opposite to outside hitter.

With the win, Rio Hondo improved to 7-10 overall and evened up its South Coast Conference record at 5-5. The Roadrunners return to the court on Wednesday (Oct. 20) when they host Long Beach City College in a 6 p.m. SCC match.
