Mounties split doubleheader with Irvine Valley to close out season

(Walnut, CA) In its final two games of the season, host Mt. SAC (15-13) split a doubleheader with Irvine Valley (12-14-2) on Friday, May 28, by the scores of 16-1 and 9-7.

Mt. SAC 16 Irvine Valley 1 (6 innings)

Trailing 1-0 through two, the Mounties tallied four in the third and five in the fifth to take a commanding 9-1 lead that grew to 16-1 with seven more runs in the sixth.

Mt. SAC's offensive output was sparked by several players, including Jacob Moreno (1-1, HR, 2 R, 2 RBI), Caleb Ellis (2-2, 2B, R), Joe La Fountain (2-3, R, 2 RBI), Fabian Moran (1-1, 2B, R, RBI), Trevor Caton (1-3, 2B, R, 2 RBI), Micahel Rosales (1-2, 2B, R, RBI), and Art Ruiz (1-1, 2B, R, 3 RBI). Cole Jordan (1-2, 3 R, 2 RBI) and Jason Flores each stole a base for the Mounties.

Starting pitcher Michael Gutierrez (3-1) earned the win for Mt. SAC, pitching four innings, allowing one earned run, and striking out four.

Irvine Valley 9 Mt. SAC 7

Up 5-4 through seven, the Lasers scored four runs in the top of the eighth to take a 9-4 lead that, in spite of three runs in the bottom of the ninth, the Mounties were unable to overcome.

La Fountain (2-3, 2B, R, RBI), Nick Lugo (2-4, R, 2 RBI, SB), Ellis (1-1, 3B, R, 2 RBI), and Jordan (2-5, R) were among the offensive highlights for Mt. SAC. Flores also stole a base for the Mounties.

Reliever Matt Mattingly (1-2) suffered the loss for Mt. SAC, surrendering two earned runs in one inning of relief of starter Manny Casillas (4.2 IP, 3 R, 3 ER, 3 SO).

This concludes the 2021 campaign for the Mounties. Tune in for another exciting season in early 2022.
