Coast returns to win column with sweep over Tigers

COSTA MESA -- After a rare "losing streak", the Orange Coast College women's volleyball team came back strong with a three-set win over visiting Riverside City College on Wednesday inside the Peterson Gym.

Summer Hanks had 16 kills, while Sara Enright added 10 goals and 21 digs as the Pirates (17-4, 10-3) rolled to a 25-18, 25-18, 25-17 Orange Empire Conference win over the Tigers (6-14, 2-11).

Paige Cutwright added further depth to the Pirate offense with nine kills, while setters Amanda Cueva and Ellie Winter combined for 34 assists. Standout libero Emily Payne anchored the Coast defense with 25 digs.

Prior to Wednesday's win, Coast played a nonconference match at Ventura, where the VC Pirates topped the OCC Pirates in four, 25-21, 19-25, 25-21, 25-23.

Enright was the top hitter for the Pirates on Tuesday with 15 kills and 16 digs, while Faith Jones stepped up with 11 kills and only one hitting error. Hanks added 10 kills, while Cueva and Winter dished out a combined 37 assists. Payne came up with 32 digs to lead the Pirate defense.

OCC's final regular season home match will take place on Wednesday against rival Golden West College, beginning at 6 p.m. With three OEC matches left, Coast currently sits in third place, one game behind second-place Irvine Valley. The fourth-place Rustlers sit in fourth place at 7-4, but will have to make up two matches that were postponed this week due to COVID protocols.
