(Walnut, CA) The Mt. SAC Women's Volleyball team is on a roll again with a four-match winning streak, three of them against South Coast Conference teams.

In those four wins, the Mounties have dropped only two sets.

The latest victory was a 3-1 win over visiting Rio Hondo Wednesday, October 6 in conference action. In the latest State CCCWVCA poll, Mt. SAC is ranked tenth.

The Mounties (10-4, 4-2) won with scores of 25-15, 25-10, 23-25, 25-22.

"I think our bench did a good job (Wednesday)," Mt. SAC Women's Volleyball coach Samantha Neely. "I think this is a huge win for us, although we always want to sweep.

"This four-set win is still a really good win for us because we're building that momentum into the second round of conference.

"The fact that we were able to play so consistent and disciplined in those first two sets, I think was one of our strongest starts of the season."

Neely was referring to the 2-0 start in the first two sets, as the Mounties jumped out to big leads in both.

Leading the way for Mt. SAC was outside hitter Riley DeGroot (7 Digs, 2 Service aces) with 19 kills, her second-highest output of the season.

The freshman only made four errors of her 30 attempts for a .500 killing percentage.

"We have a lot of big hitters on our team," Neely said. "As we progress in the season, people are getting to see us play more and more and they are going to key into those tendencies a little bit.

"We have to make sure they have a full artillery of weapons to use, as opposed to that big boom that we all get excited about."

Outside hitter Allison Whiteman and JJ Quarrels (4 D) added nine and seven kills, respectively.

After the Mounties built up big leads in the first two sets, in which DeGroot accounted for a large amount of the kills, Rio Hondo (5-9, 3-5) stayed close throughout the third set and came away with a 25-23 victory, to trail, 2-1 in sets.

The fourth set saw 12 ties before Whiteman took charge in the final points for the win.

With the Mounties holding a, 22-20 lead, Whiteman brought them home with three kills in the final six points.

"There's a lot of opportunities for placement balls on the court and I think we take advantage of that," Whiteman said. "I think just being open at the right time is just a good connection.

"It was the fire at the right time and wanting to get it done.

Whiteman got it done with a thundering kill for the win.

Setters Ally Euston (7 D, 3 Service Aces) and Kylie Rhodes (3 D, 2 K, 1 SA) added 17 and 13 assists, respectively. Riannel Arevalo and Bristol Christelman split duties as liberos, with 15 and 11 digs, respectively.

The Mounties continue conference action with a match against East L.A. College Friday (Oct. 8).
