Grossmont College Softball takes the win against Santa Barbara at Orange Coast College Saturday, February 29, 2020. It was a suspenseful and exciting game to see!
The Griffins started out strong, only allowing 2 runs to be scored in the first. Then Grossmont shut down Santa Barbara for the next two innings while getting on the board.
Lexi Schmehr struggled to find the limited strike zone, but had a strong offense and defense behind her to gain the win.
The Griffin bats were hot as the team obtained 15 hits. Multiple hits were earned by Lexi Schmehr, Jazmine Gomez, Kelly Olson, Sierra Schlichting, Gabby Clippinger, Sierra Marty, Danica Crews, and Jamie Medlin.
Gabby Clippinger was on fire with all 4 at bats to deep center field including one hit over the fence. This was Clippinger's first collegiate home run!
Santa Barbara did not fold over; they scored two home runs.
In the top the 7th, the Griffins were winning 6-7 when Santa Barbara earned their second home run of the game and scored multiple runs.
The Griffins trailed 9-7 into the bottom of the 7th.
Sierra Marty hit a line drive to center for a single. Danica Crews continued the momentum with a single to left field. Jamie Medlin fooled the infield with a fake bunt and punched the ball hard up the middle to score Marty. Crews and Medlin were in scoring position with Schmehr up to bat and zero outs.
Schmehr slapped the ball towards shortstop, but it was stopped by the pitcher. Crews took a gamble and beat the throw from first to tie to the game 9-9, with Medlin on third. Jazmine Gomez (with a 1-1 count) drove a line to right field scoring Medlin to win the game 10-9 for the Griffins!
