VENTURA – The SBCC baseball team closed out a perfect weekend against Ventura, going on the road to beat the Pirates for the third time in two days on Sunday, 5-4.

In what was a back-and-forth affair throughout, second baseman Daniel Hirose and right fielder Patrick Walsh both shined with a game-high three hits apiece. The Vaqueros (15-7, 6-3) finished with 12 hits as a team, their highest total in just over a month.

Things began picking up in the fourth. Left fielder Matty Fung hit a leadoff single and eventually stole third. Walsh – who already had a single in the second inning – brought Fung home with an RBI double to open the scoring.

The Pirates (9-15, 5-7) answered back with one run in both the fourth and the fifth to take a 2-1 lead. Third baseman Daniel Ghiorso tallied one of two hits on the day in the top of the sixth, singling and stealing a pair of bases before scoring on a groundout by shortstop Sebastian Arguelles.

With the game tied at 2-2, Ventura added two more runs in the bottom of the sixth. However, SBCC saved its best for what would be a big seventh inning.

The Pirates actually struck out the Vaqueros first two batters, but SBCC fought through it to put up three runs on four hits the rest of the way. Hirose sored first on a Ventura error. Walsh hit an RBI single to give Fung his second run of the day, tying it at 4-4. Arguelles then hit a big RBI single as Ghiorso made it home for the second time, putting SBCC back in the lead.

Needing a tying run, Ventura was shutout over the final three innings, managing two hits.
