Coby Morales Comes Up Clutch With Late Home Run, Chargers Win 7-4

CYPRESS, CA- The Cypress baseball team (11-5, 7-2 OEC) hosted Santa Ana College (9-6, 7-2 OEC) in a doubleheader on Friday afternoon. The Chargers finished the four-game series against the Dons with three wins after a, 4-7, win in the series finale. 

GAME 1

Nico Alex (0-for-3, 1 RBI) and Matthew Oliden (1-for-2, 1 RBI) led the team in RBIs with one. First baseman Noah Karliner (1-for-3, 1 run), second baseman Jordan Kendig (1 run), and right fielder Corbin Ellis (1-for-3, 1 run) all contributed to the Chargers offense by scoring one run each. Santa Ana's Nick Lopez (2-for-3, 3 runs, 5 RBI's) led the offense for the Dons. 

The Chargers got their first run on the board in the bottom of the second when Mason Pastorello (1-for-2) singled to third base allowing Corbin Ellis (1-for-3, 1 run) to score on a throw. The Dons led the first half of the game, after putting up five runs in the first inning and two more in the second. Santa Ana's Nick Lopez (2-for-3, 3 runs, 5 RBI's) led the Dons offensive charge and was one of the leading scorers along with teammate, Jacob Nava (2-for-2, 3 runs). In the bottom of the fifth, the Chargers scored their final two runs of the game. Nico Alex (0-for-3, 1 RBI) grounded out to shortstop and earned an RBI scoring Jordan Kendig. The Chargers scoring run ended after Matthew Oliden (1-for-2, 1 RBI) singled to center field allowing Noah Karliner (1-for-3, 1 run) to score. Cypress struggled during their first match of the day against Santa Ana losing, 16-3.

GAME 2

Center fielder, Andrew Sojka (2-for-3, 3 runs, 1 RBI), was key on the Chargers offensive end crossing the plate three times. First baseman Coby Morales (2-for-4, 1 run, 3 RBIs) led the team in RBI's. Santa Ana's, Luke Davis (1-for-5, 2 runs), led the Dons on offense with Griffin Selby (1-for-4, 1 run) and Nick Lopez (1 run) each adding a run to the board.

Santa Ana kicked the scoring off early in game two, scoring two runs in the top of the first on a single by Sebastian McSherry (1-for-3, 1 RBI). Dalton Sloniger (2-for-4, 2 RBIs) answered in the bottom of third with a single to center field, earning an RBI after Andrew Sojka (2-for-3, 3 runs, 1 RBI) scored. In the bottom of the fourth, Ricky Lane (0-for-4, 1 run) tied up the game after scorning a run from an Andrew Sojka sacrafice fly to left field. The Dons moved ahead with two runs in the top of the seventh but the Chargers bounced back with three of their own. Coby Morales hit a game-changing three-run-homerun in the bottom of the seventh that sealed the Chargers victory, 7-4. 

UP NEXT: The Chargers will take on the Hornets in a four-game series next week starting Tuesday (5/11) at 2pm. Cypress will be hosting the Hornets again on Thursday (5/13) at 2pm before traveling to Fullerton College on Friday (5/14) for a doubleheader starting at 12pm.
