College of the Canyons shut out its opponent for the second time in as many games, downing No. 12 San Bernardino Valley College 2-0 on Friday behind a strong all around effort from the Cougars.
Canyons (2-1) got on the board early in the 26th minute when freshman midfielder Emily Perez booted a ball past the SBVC keeper to make it a 1-0 affair. The goal was Perez' first of the season and came by way of an assist from Aileen Lopez.
The Wolverines recorded 10 shots in the game but were stopped to the tune of six saves from Canyons goalkeeper Aaliyah Lopez (1-1).
COC freshman Araceli Castaneda netted her first goal of the season in the 83rd minute to put an exclamation point on the Cougars' 2-0 victory. The score was assisted by freshman Maggie Maldonado.
SBVC (3-1-1) began the week tied for the No. 12 spot in the California Community College Sports Information Association (CCCSIA) statewide poll.
Canyons will remain home to host Moorpark College at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday Sept. 17.
