In a battle of two of the top teams in the Coast Conference as well as the state, the No. 6 state-ranked City College of San Francisco women's soccer team edged No. 3 Las Positas College 1-0 in Livermore on Friday.

The Rams bounced back from their first loss of the season to take their conference opener against a tough Las Positas team that also lost its game prior to Friday's contest. CCSF improved to 7-1 overall and 1-0 in the Coast Conference while Las Positas fell to 8-2 and 0-2 in conference play.

Friday's game was scoreless at halftime and stayed that way until the 70th minute. Iliana Sanchez beat Hawks' goalkeeper Dariana Mihalache for the goal that would prove to be the game-winner. Leslie Murillo was credited with the assist on the play.

CCSF goalkeeper Alexia Estrada and the Rams defense posted its fifth shutout in eight games this season. Mihalache totaled six saves for the Hawks.

"The win tonight was huge for us because it came from another challenging road game against a talented opponent," said CCSF head coach Jeff Wilson. "We didn't start very well but at halftime, I challenged the players to get back to our style of play and dominate the ball.  Once again, they accepted the challenge and put so much pressure on Las Positas until we finally got the goal we deserved.  It's really great to bounce back after our only loss and prove to ourselves that we are a talented team with lots of potential."

The Rams return to action on Tuesday (Oct. 5) at 4 p.m. when they host West Valley College in a Coast Conference game.
