Baseball team downs San Bernardino Valley for fourth win

Irvine Valley bounced back from its first loss of the season with a dominant performance in a 10-3 win over San Bernardino Valley at home Saturday.

IVC fell, 12-5, at Compton on Friday, but got big games from freshman center fielder Shane Stafford, sophomore catcher Connor Tallakson, sophomore second baseman Nolan Cusey and sophomore right fielder Noah Madole on Saturday.

The win improved Irvine Valley's record to 4-1 overall. The Wolverines had their record fall to 1-4.

Stafford went 3 for 4 with a home run, double, walk, two runs scored and four RBI from the lead off spot for the Lasers. He also pitched a scoreless ninth inning. It was his first appearance on the mound this season.

Tallakson added three hits, Cusey went 2 for 4 with two runs and one RBI and Madole was 2 for 3 with a double, three runs and two RBI.

Sophomore right-hander Austin Chapman won his first game of the season with six solid innings. He gave up a run in the first inning, but shut down San Bernardino Valley after that. 

He allowed one run on five hits with no walks and four strikeouts through six.

Freshmen Chris Cody, Cole Dietch and Stafford each threw a scoreless inning after that. Dietch and Stafford each had two strikeouts.

After falling behind, 1-0, in the first, IVC scored four runs in the bottom of the second inning to take control.

Cusey hit an RBI single up the middle to get the Lasers on the board. Stafford then walked with the bases loaded, freshman third baseman Kevin James walked with the bases loaded to make it a 3-1 game and the Lasers scored a fourth run on a passed ball.

It was all Irvine Valley the rest of the way.

IVC is back in action on Tuesday when it plays at Mt. San Jacinto at 1 p.m.
