It was as unlikely an outcome as could be considering the recent paths of the two teams, but the Pasadena City College men's soccer team came up with its best defensive effort of the season to earn a 0-0 tie at state #5 and host Mt. San Antonio. The South Coast Conference game was played under the lights Friday night in Walnut.

Mt. SAC was 8-0 v. California Community College teams entering the match and its only loss v. a nationally-ranked Richland College (Texas) squad. PCC goalie Paul Jing made 13 saves as the Mounties were shut out for the first time this season.

PCC (4-10-1, and now 0-3-1 in SCC play) came into the contest after disappointing losses at Long Beach City College, 4-0, on Oct. 8, and at home v. East Los Angeles, 5-0, on Oct. 12. The defensive breakdowns in the ELAC match had PCC head coach Gerry Mora change his game plan entering the Mt. SAC game.

Pasadena made defense a #1 priority and despite constant pressure by the Mounties, Jing withstood high quality scoring chances. He was aided by a number of defensive breakups and clear outs by Cameron Montana, Seth Sandoval, Erik Perez, Kareem Browne, Roger Faustino and Emilio Ramirez. Despite being outshot, 18-6, the Lancers came away with their first team point in conference play.

"Our players made it extremely difficult for Mt. SAC to break down our team," said PCC assistant coach Art Alvarado. "We were able to handle wave after wave of their attacks. Paul came up big, including a key save in extra time."

Pasadena snapped a 7-game road losing streak and a 4-game losing string overall. It was the team's first tie of the season and first since November, 2019 (1-1 v. Cerritos).

The Lancers will try to score their first goal in 336 minutes and first non-penalty kick score in five games when they host state #4 El Camino on Tuesday, Oct. 19 in a 2 p.m. conference game.

That day, the college welcomes back Lancers soccer fans as Robinson Stadium is now open with free admission for home games. Social distancing and masks are recommended at all outdoor events at PCC to respect the public health and safety of those around you.
