Women's volleyball team rolls Santiago Canyon at home

The Irvine Valley women's volleyball team is on a roll.

The Lasers won their fourth straight Orange Empire Conference match in a row and won easy.

Irvine Valley captured the first 12 points in the first set on its way to a 25-3, 25-11, 25-19 victory at home on Wednesday night,

IVC led the first set, 12-0, before Santiago Canyon scored a point.

But it was 17-1 after an ace by Laser sophomore libero Alexandra Pestolis, a kill by freshman middle blocker Kaitlyn Karsten and another ace by Pestolis.

A kill by freshman outside hitter Jaclyn Sanchez ended the set.

The Lasers jumped out to a 8-3 lead in the second set after a kill by freshman outside hitter Emily Guenter.

And IVC went up, 19-10, with two straight kills by Karsten.

Irvine Valley moved to set point on a kill by freshman outside hitter Angelina Griego. And Griego finished off the set (25-11) with a kill from a set by freshman Maddie Harkey.

The Lasers went down early in the third set, but rallied late to complete the sweep.

Irvine Valley won six of the final seven points in the third set.

Griego had two straight kills, Santiago Canyon had a net called to set up match point and then two points later the Hawks served out to end the match.

Four players had at least six kills for IVC.

Freshman opposite Jayli Nealy ended with 13 kills and hit .400, freshman middle blocker Kaitlyn Karsten added six kills and hit .417, freshman outside hitter Emily Guenter had six kills and hit .385 and freshman outside hitter Angelina Griego finished with six kills and hit .364.

The Lasers hit a season-best .412 as a team.

Guenter led the way in digs with 16, Sanchez contributed four aces and freshman setter Madeline Harkey ran the offense with 35 assists.

Irvine Valley improved its record to 11-3 overall and 7-2 in the OEC, which keeps the Lasers in a tie for second place with Orange Coast.

The Lasers play again next Wednesday, hosting Riverside at 6 p.m. for a conference match at 6 p.m. Fans are welcome with social distancing.
