COD Softball sweeps aside Coyotes, 13-6 & 7-5

COD (8-16; 5-3) fought from behind both games of their double header, defeating heat and the Cerro Coso Coyotes of Ridgecrest (4-23; 0-9), 13-6 and 7-5.

Desert opened up game one of the double header, giving up five runs in the top of the first, but the Roadrunners were not phased, they started chipping away at the lead.

Sophomore right handed starting pitcher Lauren Robinson (La Quinta H.S.), who would grab her 200th strike out for the first out in the top of the first, would clobber a single to right, scoring freshman second baseman Davia Hines (Palm Springs H.S.) and getting the home side to within four, 5-1.

In the second, freshman third baseman Jessie Rios-Huerta (La Quinta H.S.) reached on an error by the Coyotes catcher, scoring freshman short stop Beyonce Mondragon (Thermal Coachella Valley) and getting the Roadrunners to within three, 5-2.

The Roadrunners would add four more runs in the fourth, giving Desert a 6-5 lead.

Bottom of the sixth, sophomore catcher Natalie Avila (Rancho Mirage H.S.) grabbed her 100th career hit which loaded the bases. Eventually, the Roadrunners would grab their first mercy of the season, knocking off the Coyotes in six innings, 13-5.

Freshman left fielder Annabelle Amador (Indio Shadow Hills) went 1 for 4 with 2 runs scored and Hines would hit her team leading seventh double of the season, knocking 3 doubles in the game, while going 5 for 5 with 3 runs scored and 4 runs batted in.

Sophomore first baseman Jaidyn Olson (Rancho Mirage H.S.) would go 2 for 4 with 2 RBI's and Robinson would not only grab her fourth win of the season, striking out 5, but also go 2 for 3 with a walk and an RBI. Mondragon would go 1 for 2 with 3 runs scored, and RBI and 2 walks in the win.

The second game would be a mirror image of the start of the first game. Desert gave up some runs early, picked away at the lead and then would take the lead, but this time it was much closer.

Freshman right handed starting pitcher Amaya Magana (La Quinta H.S.) was a beast in the circle and at the plate, not only tossing a complete game, striking out three, but going 4 for 4 with two runs scored from the six hole in the lineup.

Freshman center fielder Elizabeth Olivas (Thermal Coachella Valley) had a good game out of the nine hole in the lineup, going 2 for 2 and crossing home plate in the second and fourth innings.

The next home game for the Roadrunners is March 26th at 12p, when the Los Angeles Harbor Seahawks of Wilmington are in town for non-Conference double header.
