GRIFFINS CAGE THE JAGUARS

El Cajon — The Grossmont College Griffins defeated the Southwestern College Jaguars 7-3 on Thursday afternoon, March 24 at Noel Michelson Field for their second consecutive win.

Grossmont (14-9, 7-3) got an outstanding pitching performance by Jake Sargent (3-2).  Sargent went eight innings striking out eight over the course of his 109 pitches (75 for strikes).  Dylan Vail came in and wrapped things up in the ninth while picking up a strikeout in the process.

Luke Denos was the hitting star for the contest going 3-for-5 with two RBIs against the Jaguars (13-11, 5-5).  Dante Juliano also picked up a trio of hits while scoring twice.

G-house got the scoring started in the third inning.  Juliano singled to lead the inning off.  Jake Allen singled up the middle to move Juliano up 90 feet.  Ethan Caschetta singled through the left side in the leadoff spot to score Juliano and advance Allen to second.  Denos singled to load the bases with no one out.  Kaleb Tedokon hit a sacrifice fly to medium left, but in foul territory to bring Allen in from third.  The Griffins closed out the inning with back-to-back fly outs.

Southwestern (13-11, 5-5) cracked the scoreboard in the top of the fifth.  With runners on second and third with one down, Andrian Hinojosa had a productive out to second allowing a run to score.

The Green and Gold came right back in the bottom of the inning to expand their lead with two outs.  After a double play, Tedokon walked to start the rally.  Zavien Watson singled to left, moving Tedokon to second.  Sean McGrew singled back up the middle to plate Tedokon and moving Watson to third.  The very next batter Skyler Agnew doubled down the right field line to bring in Watson and replaced him at third with McGrew.  Sadly, that is where the rally would end.

However, the Griffins put another pair up on the board in the sixth.  Juliano singled to start the inning and was sacrificed to second by Allen.  Then things got a little testy.

Denos had a couple of close pitches called balls that the Jaguar fans and bench didn't particularly agree with.  He then deposited a 3-2 pitch into the canyon behind the right field wall.  As he was rounding the bases, a few of the Jaguar players were chirping, as were the Griffins.  Both teams never left their dugouts, but some postering was being done by both squads.

Things settled down after that.

In the bottom of the seventh inning, Agnew doubled down the left field line to move McGrew to third after reaching via an errant throw.  Noah Lane was an unlucky recipient of a lineout to the pitcher.  Juliano singled up the middle to bring in McGrew with the final Griffin run of the day.

Southwestern would put a two spot up in the eighth but would get no closer.

The Griffins will be back in action on Tuesday when they host Imperial Valley at 2:00 p.m. at Noel Michelson Field.
