The West Valley softball team dropped both ends of a doubleheader at Butte Saturday to close out non-conference competition at 8-5. The Vikings open Coast Conference action Thursday, Feb. 23 against San Jose City College (5-5) at 3:00pm at Viking Field.

WVC jumped out to a 3-0 in game one against the Roadrunners (10-5). Larissa Higgins made it 1-0 in the top of the first with an RBI single that knocked in Kaylee Ramirez, who had singled. Kassady Alcazar's two-run homer, scoring Natalie Clevenger, made it 3-0 heading to the home half of the second. Butte punched four runs across in the bottom of the second, and then added insurance runs in the third and sixth to account for the final 6-3 score.

Viking starter Miranda Torres took the loss in the circle, while Alzazar highlighted the WVC offense with a 2-2, two RBI outing.

West Valley again took a 1-0 lead in the first inning in game two, this time on an RBI single from Sydney Heming that drove in Kaylee Ramirez. Butte knotted it up with a run in the bottom of the first and then got the game-winning run in the fifth. The Vikings recorded six hits, all singles, with Heming and Reyna Cruz getting two each. Shelby White went the distance, scattering six hits and striking out three Roadrunners.
