Men's soccer team's 2022 season comes to end at El Camino

A very successful Irvine Valley men's soccer team came to a close on Friday night at El Camino.

The Lasers gave it their all, but lost to No. 4 seed El Camino, 3-0, in the second round of the California Community College Athletics Association So. Cal. Regionals.

Irvine Valley ends its season with a record of 11-7-5 overall.

"I am very proud of the character the guys showed tonight," Irvine Valley coach Conor Ward said. "It was a tough loss, but a great season."

El Camino (17-2-2) moves on to face No. 5 Mt. SAC in the next round on Tuesday.

The Warriors got an early goal from Mario Carlos and then held off the Lasers for nearly 80 minutes before two late goals gave ECC the insurance it needed.

Carlos opened the scoring in the 11th minute as he picked a ball from Lasers' freshman defender Lennart Granzow and then had a clean one-on-one against freshman goalkeeper Tygo Steenvoorden, beating him to the far post to give the Warriors a quick 1-0 advantage.

The Lasers had chances throughout, but El Camino goalie Donovan Palomares made five saves.

IVC also hit the post with a shot in the 63rd minute and missed a few breakaways against Palomares.

In the 90th minute, the Warriors got some breathing room as Jovanny Mejia curled a shot into the top corner off a pass from Carlos to make it 2-0.

Carlos added his second tally of the night in stoppage time on a penalty kick to wrap up the scoring in the match.

El Camino moves on to face No. 5 seed Mt. San Antonio on Tuesday night.

Steenvoorden finished with three saves for the Lasers.
