Pirates send all five pairs to OEC Round of 16
IRVINE -- The winning continued on a pairs level for the Orange Coast College beach volleyball team as all five twosomes advanced to the Round of 16 during Wednesday's opening rounds of the Orange Empire Conference Pairs Championships, hosted by Irvine Valley College.
OCC's No. 1 pair of Brisa Zepata-Reaves/Corinne Williams picked up a 21-13, 21-11 win today, while at No. 2, Natalia Brandlin/Rose Whitter took care of business with a 21-13, 21-6 win.
It was more of the same at No. 3 and 4 as the pairs of Paige Cutwright/Alexandra Selivanov (21-10, 21-7) and Kingsley Mason/Leah Thibault (17-21, 21-14, 15-11) each advanced to the Round of 16.
At No. 5, the Pirate pair of Izzy Duchaine/Theresia Amtmann had to compete in a play-in match first and posted a 21-16, 21-13 win before winning again in the Round of 32 with an upset win over the top pair from Cypress College, 21-11, 17-21, 16-14.
The Round of 16 matches will kick off for the Pirates on Friday at 10 a.m. at IVC.
As for the TEAM competition, that will kick off on Tuesday at 10 a.m. on the Newland VB Courts in Huntington Beach as the Pirates (seeded No. 2 in the Southern California Regional bracket) host No. 7 Rio Hondo and No. 9 Irvine Valley. Order of matchups will be determined over the next few days.
