Eagle Offense Starts Fast in Softball Win at Shasta

Halliday Hubbard, batting leadoff and playing centerfield for the Eagles, went 6 for 8 at the plate and scored 4 runs durihttps://coseagles.com/sports/sball/2022-23/bios/atchley_nevaeh_ryesng a Golden Valley Conference doubleheader at Shasta Saturday afternoon. She helped spark an 8-4 win in game two by going 3 for 3, scoring twice, and doubling to drive in a run during a 5-run second inning rally.

The Eagles' first conference win of the season followed a 7-5 loss in the opener.

Making up for lost time, the Eagles have 10 games scheduled in the next week, six of them in the next three days. They're scheduled to play non-conference doubleheaders Thursday at Merced and Friday at Hartnell in Salinas, then two GVC games against Lassen on Saturday, pending the weather.

Saturday in Redding, the Eagles led after two innings in both games against the Knights: 5-1 in the first game and 7-2 in game two. They had 12 hits and walked three time in the opener but were unable to score again after the 2nd inning.

A bases-clearing double in the top of the 1st inning by catcher Abigail Wolf gave the Eagles a 3-0 lead, then Shyla Mead singled to drive in 2 in the 2nd. Mead, Alexis Figueroa, and Hubbard had 3 hits each, but Shasta rallied to win it with 2 runs in the 3rd, 2 in the 4th, and 2 in the 6th.

The Eagles again came out swinging in game two, and pitchers Leea Brown, Hannah Stone, and Gracie Copeland made sure the lead held up.

Mead singled to drive in Hubbard and advance Nevaeh Atchley to third in the 1st inning, then the Eagles pulled off a double steal with Atchley scoring and Mead taking second base.

The Knights tied it in the bottom of the 1st, then the Eagles' 5-run rally in the 2nd began with run-scoring doubles by Figueroa and Hubbard. A Shasta fielding error allowed Hubbard to score, Katelyn Weber singled to drive in a run, and another Shasta fielding error allowed Wolf to score.

Siskiyous added a run in the 5th on an RBI single by Mead, and Shasta scored single runs in the 3rd and 5th.

Leea Brown pitched the first 4 innings and earned the win. She allowed 3 runs on 7 hits while striking out 3 and walking none. Hannah Stone gave up a run on 4 hits in 2 innings, and Gracie Copeland retired 3 of the 4 batters she faced to end it in the 7th.

The Eagles won game two while being out-hit 9 to 12 after losing game one while out-hitting the Knights 12 to 9.

Hubbard was 3 for 3 with 2 walks in the nightcap, Mead was 2 for 4, Figueroa 2 for 4, and Samantha Ray singled and scored twice.

The Eagles' next conference opponent, Lassen, is 0-8 so far in the GVC.
