Pirates topple Hornets in four, sweep past Dons in OEC play

COSTA MESA -- It was another solid week of play for the Orange Coast College women's volleyball team as they topped Fullerton College in four sets on Wednesday before sweeping past Santa Ana on Friday.
On Wednesday, Sara Enright had 19 hills and 20 digs to lead the Pirates (15-2, 8-2 in the Orange Empire Conference) to a 25-15, 25-12, 24-26, 25-21 win over the host Hornets (11-10, 5-5). Summer Hanks added 13 kills, while Brisa Zapata-Reaves chipped in 11 kills to go along with 12 digs. Ellie Winter dished out a team-high 27 assists, while teammate Amanda Cueva added 19. On defense, it was another strong night from libero Emily Payne, who racked up 31 digs in the win.
On Friday, it was smooth sailing for the Pirates over the Dons in a 25-12, 25-14, 25-15 win. Enright again led the way with 14 kills and three, while Paige Cutwright was strong in the middle with 10 kills, five blocks and three aces.
In the opening set, Coast led 10-7 before pulling away from the Dons (6-11, 1-9) with a 10-2 run to make it 20-9. Enright ripped three kills over that span, while Summer Hanks knocked down two of her own.
Santa Ana had an early 6-4 lead in the second set before Coast went on a 9-1 run to grab the lead for good. Three straight aces from Cutwright and back-to-back kills from Enright helped give the Pirates the momentum that they carried for the rest of the set. Santa Ana got to within four at 16-12 before another big OCC run (8-1) put the hosts in the driver's seat for good.
The Dons stayed within in range throughout most of the third period and trailed 18-14 before four straight by the Pirates -- and seven of the final eight -- proved to be the difference.
OCC will return to action on Wednesday at Santiago Canyon College before returning to the Peterson Gym on Friday against Irvine Valley. Both matches will begin at 6 p.m.
