Pirates go deep three times in 10-8 win over Cougars

COSTA MESA -- The Orange Coast College baseball took advantage of the elements at John Altobelli Park and launched three home runs, which helped spark a 10-8 win over visiting College of the Canyons on Tuesday.

With a steady wind blowing out, the Pirates (11-4) took the driver out of the bag and scored six runs off of the swings of the bat to cap off a 10-run, 14-hit attack on the Cougars (7-5).

Sebastian Moore went 4-for-5, including a three-run HR and a two-run single, scoring twice and driving in five for OCC. Zach Dickason went 2-for-4 with a 2-run blast to go along with two runs scored, while Jaden Lyburtus added a solo shot, his sixth of the season.

Coast struggled defensively early on and allowed three unearned runs to score over the first two innings, but the Pirate bats picked up the slack and scored five over that same span to led, 5-3. RBI-singles by Evan Scalley and Zach Crandall in the first were followed by back-to-back HRs in the second by Dickason and Lyburtus.

The Cougars pushed across four more runs in the top of the fifth to jump ahead, 7-5, only to see Moore's three-run shot to right-center push the Pirates back out in front, 8-7 in the bottom of the fifth.

Canyons tied things up in the top of the seventh, but in the bottom of the frame, a walk, a hit batter and a wild pitch put OCC runners on second and third with one out. Moore stepped up against a drawn-in infield and promptly drove in both runs with a two-run single that put the Pirates ahead for good.

OCC starter Jack Ross pitched better than his line score would indicate, pitching into the seventh and allowing five earned runs over that span with a walk and two strikeouts. Reliever Jake Covey came in with runners on first and second with one out and on his first (and only) pitch, he got a 6-3 double play to end the threat in the top of the seventh. That two-out, one-pitch performance earned Covey the win (1-0). Jacob Odle pitched a scoreless eighth and Dimond Loosli earned his second save of the year with a scoreless ninth.

Coast will travel to L.A. Mission College on Thursday, beginning at 2 p.m. for the first of three straight on the road. OCC will return to John Altobelli Park on Thursday, March 9 against Santa Ana, also at 2 p.m.
