Huntington Beach, Calif. - The Golden West College baseball team put on a show for those that came out to Hoover Field to support them in their 7-4 Opening Day win against Palomar College on Friday.
Brett Wozniak took the mound for the first time as a Rustler and did not disappoint. Over four innings, Wozniak struck out five batters, held the Comets to three hits, and allowed one earned run. He is expected to start next Thursday at home against Santa Barbara.
Wasting no time at all, the Rustlers found themselves leading the Comets 2-0 after Jonah Sebring and Steven Casas both scored on defensive errors in the bottom of the first inning.
The Rustler offense was not done showing off. A pair of singles from Steven Casas and Sergio Alfaro extended Golden West's lead to 6-1 heading into the fifth inning.
If the crowd was not entertained enough, an approximate 450 ft. fifth inning solo shot by Zech Samayoa got everyone fired up, and would be the last to cross home plate in this game.
Palomar shortened the deficit to 7-4 in the late innings, but the Rustlers defense stopped the Comets from adding on anymore damage, earning Luke Higgins his first save of the season.
NEXT: The series between the Rustlers and Comets will continue Saturday at Palomar College starting at 1 p.m.
