For the first time this season, Citrus College found itself trailing but battled back and grabbed a 5-4 victory over LA Valley to start Western State Conference-South action Tuesday.

The Owls improve to 5-2 overall and open conference 1-0 with their third-straight win. The Monarchs drop to 1-10 on the year and 0-1 in WSC-South.

LA Valley struck first with a run in the bottom of the third, but Citrus finally broke through with four runs in the top of the sixth. Jasani Zavalza led the inning off with a single through the left side to get things going before the Owls loaded the bases with two outs.

Paige Horvat stepped up to the plate and hit a bases-clearing double to right field before coming home on a Torie Brewer base hit, 4-1.

The Monarchs tied things up in the bottom half of the inning, but the visitors took back the lead in their next chance at the plate. With one out, Zavalza and Patty Rodriguez knocked back-to-back doubles to give the Owls a 5-4 lead.

Citrus' defense locked down and held onto the upper hand, handing Marissa Gallegos the win in the circle.

The Owls are back in action Wednesday, taking on East LA at 3 p.m. on the road.
